Is your novel or non-fiction book almost good to go but you’ve looked at the thing so much you can’t see the wood for the trees (or separate the right words from the… what the heck is that supposed to be)?
As a fellow soldier in the field, I’m right there with you. Which means I know how hard it is to get through those final excruciating stages to completion, ‘during which the hair often falls out and the teeth decay’, as Flannery O’Connor put it. She was referring to writing rather than finishing, but I think we’ve all been there at one stage or another.
I also know how a reader feels when they stop reading because they can’t get past the typos or the grammar issues enough to really enjoy your story. It’s a bit like taking your gleaming new McLaren for a spin with one flat tyre or a mud splash up the door.
But maybe I can help… (sorry, not with the McLaren).
What makes you think that?
Aside from an author, I’m a qualified proofreader with the Publishing Training Centre and an English Literature graduate. With over four years’ experience of working with authors and publishers, I can proofread your manuscript, putting your mind at rest and giving you the courage you need to hit that big red PUBLISH button.
What exactly can you do for my book?
A proofread is the final check of your edited book from cover to cover. It weeds out errors and checks for consistency throughout, ensuring your final version is well-presented and professional. This can include checking spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalisation, hyphenation, headings, typeface, spacing, spelling and numerical style, headers and footers, illustrations and their corresponding captions, references, footnotes, bibliographies, prelims and end matter (such as title page, contents page, acknowledgements, book blurb, About the Author, etc); not to forget formatting, for a smooth transition when you upload your file to your chosen retailer or distributor.
How will you manage all that?
Abiding by your preferred English usage standards (UK or US, etc) and your chosen publishing platform(s), I will work with your manuscript in Microsoft Word using Word's Track Changes facility. This will allow you to see all the changes I make, and you can decide whether to accept them or not. If you are unfamiliar with Track Changes, I’ll talk you through how to use it.
More importantly, how much will it cost?
Hit the button below and complete the short form to give me some idea of what we’re dealing with (in case we’re talking biblical length here - remember, I know what you authors are like). You’ll hear back from me within 24 to 48 hours with a quote, availability and timescale.
Having your work proofread is not like handing in an essay at school. I don’t own a red pen and there’ll be no detention for too many spelling errors. I’m here to work with you, not against you. Together we’ll get your book ready to go out into the world, freeing you up to start on the next one… There will be a next one, right?
